Back to the grind....work.

Saturday was my first day back to work. I was really nervous, because it had been 3 months since I had done anything to do with nursing. I'm thinking, I'm sure I will get some easy patients, cause I'm SURE they don't want me to kill anyone on my first day back. You know, EASE into it. I walk through the break room door and I am greeted by the charge nurse, who is smiling. "Welcome back, Sarah." She looked happy, but there was something in her voice that told me I was about to receive some bad news. "I'm sorry," she continued, "but you're going to have to go to the ICU." I thought it was a joke! The intensive care unit? On my first day back? Ya right. Then she handed me the assignment sheet, and there was my name in bold letters, Sarah- ICU. No. Way. I got a lump in my throat and bravely walked myself over to the unit. The nurse started giving me report. Hmmm....I guess I know what she's talking about. Ok, I can do this. The first half of my shift was great! My patients were stable, no prob. Then at midnight the crap hit the fan. My patient started crashing and had to be intubated. Luckily the intensivist, respiratory therapist and charge nurse were right there the whole time. Whew! I was seriously glad when that shift was over. HAHAHA Welcome back.

Oh my gosh Sarah, I would have wet my pants! Probably cause the feeling is something I know I will most surely have when the end of six months has come and I go back to the hospital. I really feel for you. I hope it gets better soon. I will be thinking about you. It is good to know I can talk to you when I have a hard day at the hospital...talking to Kyle or anyone else who does not work there really doesn't help. They just do not understand...So you are part time now aren't you?

Wow...what a first day back! I hope you get back into the swing of things soon. I am already nervous to go back to work after our baby...and I haven't even had her yet! I can't remember what hospital you're at now, but try to pull some strings and be my nurse during my labor & delivery, okay?? :) Hope work improves for you!
